Acclimatization for trekking
Bhutan treks are physically demanding. The terrain comes with frequent and abrupt changes. Some days can involve a strenuous walk along a rocky and muddy path, keeping on the move for 7-9 hours with few rests along the way. But our treks in Bhutan can range from a one-to-three-day leisurely walk to the arduous 25-day Snowman Trek which goes above one of the highest settlements in the world. You will need to be physically fit and you must have hiked or acclimatized to at least an altitude of 3,000 meters or more if you want to trek more than a week in high alpine regions.
You should do as much walking and hiking as possible before arriving in Bhutan. Your legs will need to be strong for the long treks. Some trekkers may want to take a Diamox trekking pill, which must be taken 72 hours before your trek for the best result. For new trekkers, we recommend a 3-day, low altitude winter trek or a 5-day high elevation trek in the spring and fall. These provide a wonderful experience with less risk of altitude sickness and easy access to the rescue in case of emergency.
Seasons and Arrangement
Trekking is organized as a camping expedition in an Eco-friendly manner. We set up comfortable weather-proof tents, thick sleeping mattresses, and pillows. You will be supplied with a wide assortment of fresh food supplies. The trekkers will be accompanied by our experienced chef, cook assistants, skilled guides, and pack animals to carry equipment and food. It is a year-round activity, though spring and autumn are the best seasons for trekking.
During the late autumn, the days are clear and the spectacular views provide you with great photo opportunities of permanently snow-capped mountains and fall colors. Spring is warmer and it is the blooming season for the endemic varieties of the Himalayan rhododendron, primulas, and magnolias. Summer is the time to see many types of flowers.
In winter, trekkers can enjoy pleasant and not too tiring low-altitude hikes in the hills of southwest Bhutan. The weather is very settled at this time of the year with clear, sunny days and deep blue skies. And we can assure you that your Bhutan memories will be extraordinary if you trek with our professional team.
